Neurotic Behavior Among a Sample of Displaced Families’ Children and Its Relationship with Self-Perception

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the interaction between neurotic behavior patterns and components of the self among displaced children of both sexes. Specifically, it sought to identify the nature of the relationships and differences between these variables. The sample consisted of 98 students (60 males and 38 females) from displaced families residing in Al-Khums due to armed conflict or political unrest. Participants were purposefully selected with the help of school counselors and social workers.

Two assessment tools were employed: one for measuring neurotic behavior symptoms (e.g., anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, and phobic disorders), and another for assessing self-perception components (realistic and social self-perception). Using linear regression analysis, the results revealed significant interactive relationships between some neurotic symptoms and self-perception. Depressive symptoms, obsessive-compulsive traits, and anxiety significantly contributed to children's realistic self-perception, while phobic symptoms had no significant effect.

Regarding social self-perception, both anxiety and depressive symptoms had a significant impact, while other variables did not. Furthermore, t-test results showed statistically significant gender differences: females scored higher in phobic and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, while males exhibited higher levels of anxiety and more positive realistic self-perception. No significant gender differences were found in social self-perception.
