The Reality of Applying Scientific Theory in Social Research

Abstract

This research examines the reality of theory utilization in social research through a critical analysis of how theory is represented in social and academic studies. The study stems from a primary objective: to shed light on the appropriate ways to employ social theory in social research. Although theory is considered the cornerstone in the construction of scientific knowledge, it often does not receive adequate attention in many social studies or from many researchers — whether in terms of understanding, application, or adaptation to the studied social phenomena and ideas. The study adopted the descriptive method, employing qualitative analysis and presenting qualitative data. The findings revealed that the weakness in theoretical application is due to several factors, including researchers’ insufficient theoretical grounding, a lack of proper understanding of the assumptions and premises of theories, and failure to meet some of the essential criteria required when linking theoretical concepts to the studied reality.
