Abstract

This study aims to analyze the areal, shape, and terrain morphometric characteristics, as well as the drainage network characteristics, of fourth- and fifth-order basins within the Wadi Jarf basin, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The analysis relies on a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with a spatial resolution of 30 × 30 meters. Through hydrological analysis of the DEM, the boundaries of the Wadi Jarf basin were delineated, and the number and boundaries of its fourth- and fifth-order sub-basins were identified. Numerous morphometric variables were extracted for these basins, such as basin area, basin length, perimeter length, drainage network characteristics, and stream order. Mathematical equations established for this purpose were applied to calculate and derive a range of additional morphometric variables. The study also aims to assess the flash flood susceptibility of the studied basins using the Morphometric Ranking Method. The study is organized into five sections. The study concludes with an analysis of the morphometric characteristics of the studied basins and a calculation of their flash flood susceptibility levels, which range from low, to moderate, to high. In addition, the study establishes a geographic database of morphometric characteristics for the fourth- and fifth-order basins in the Wadi Jarf basin, which can be utilized—along with the study's findings—in research related to wadi flooding, its management, and the mitigation of its risks, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions.
