Perspectives on Sufism have varied widely, with scholars interpreting it as a social, psychological, artistic, or philosophical phenomenon. This study approaches Islamic Sufism through linguistic and historical lenses, beginning with an analysis of the term in Arabic, followed by a discussion of key views on its origins within Islam, and concluding with an outline of its distinctive features and the impact of foreign ideas. The study also serves as a preliminary introduction to a forthcoming research focus on Sufi pedagogy—its goals and methods.
