This study examines the political and military transformations in the Ancient Near East during the late seventh century BCE, focusing on the rise of Babylon and Media and their alliance, which significantly altered the regional balance of power. It traces the emergence of Babylon and the growing political influence of the Chaldeans, culminating in the establishment of the Neo-Babylonian Empire under Nabopolassar, alongside the political and military development of Media under Cyaxares. The study also examines the political instability and decline of Assyria, as well as Egypt’s position in the regional conflict. The Babylonian-Median alliance played a decisive role in the fall of Nineveh in 612 BCE, followed by continued confrontations with the remnants of Assyrian power. The study concludes that the decline of Assyria and the rise of Babylon and Media resulted from the interaction of political, military, and economic factors, leading to a major shift in the balance of power in Mesopotamia.
